In this product review, I’m going to share with you what I like and what I don’t like about this famous concealer and why I said “I hate it” in the first place. Yes, those words. For a long time I wanted to try the “wonderful” fetish makeup product from Tarte Cosmetics , but not because I needed a concealer that would give me life – for that I already have Catrice’s Camuflage concealer, which is not the best in the world, but already I will talk about it in another post and I advance that it is NOT a clone of this one – but to be able to try one of the best-selling products in the history of makeup and see if it effectively covered as well as it is told and if it avoids the folds of the dark circles that they are a nightmare
Tarte is a brand that despite its recent fame has been in the market for 18 years. It is Cruelty Free and one of the first brands that went ahead in avoiding mineral oils, sulfates, parabens in its formulas. The Shape Tape and eyeshadow palettes boosted the brand, so much so that at its most popular, a concealer sold every 20 seconds! Imagine the earnings in just one day with a single item.
The color range of the concealer was quite limited in the beginning (just like sales of only 2 per person and it is still a product in which discounts are seldom adjusted on the web) but now it has an acceptable 13 color ranges, of which only 2 are for dark skin (which now causes problems in the USA with their new Shape Tape Foundation) . Being the favorite of American bloggers, it also became a global favorite. In Spain it is not possible to get it in any store, but through the web, using a service such as MyMallBox or taking advantage of the free Worldwide shipping that they usually launch from time to time for international customers.
Packaging and applicator
The packaging of the product is beautiful and it is also larger than a concealer, since it has 10 ml, in contrast to the Radiant Creamy Concealer by Nars or the Camouflage by catrice that only have 5 ml. So you pay for the size or the formula or both. It comes in a cardboard box with the characteristic purple color that identifies the brand that is also found on the lid of the plastic bottle that contains the product, like most of the correctors on the market. We drop the money for what we see, we are supposed to pay for the formula and action of the product, but if it is beautiful, it does not bother anyone and this is it.
The applicator is unique and I have not seen it in any other concealer (And boy did I use concealers!). It is a fairly large applicator that covers a lot (I would say too much) the area of the dark circles. But taking into account that this product is considered a multipurpose one (To correct, illuminate and contour … although for this you need at least 3 colors…) it makes sense to have an applicator that adjusts to the areas of facial contour and dark circles. It also takes a lot of product, so you have to be careful with the amount of concealer used to correct because otherwise you can have excess of it on your face.
Color and Texture
The texture of this product is peculiar. In principle, I had read that it is a product that very dry the dark circle area and that is one of the reasons why I completely refused to buy it since I have exactly that dry area. However, upon receipt, I noticed that it is indeed a dense formula but it is not dry at all as I had read or seen in other beauty videos at first.
It struck me then that when I placed it on the back of my hand to test it, I felt a slight greasy sensation and this makes sense thanks to some of the ingredients in the concealer formula: olive oil. Here we dismantle that “oil-free” thing unless olive oil is one of those new vegan ingredients, gluten-free, phatalate-free or whatever. In addition to that oil, it has sunflower oil and various butters. When I applied it to my eye cup, it didn’t feel dry at all; this can be positive and negative depending on the use / skin type.
Positive because for me the dry situation of the dark circles does not worsen and the ingredients are beneficial to maintain a certain level of hydration after applying makeup. But … the negative explains why I have had problems with it. The first negative aspect is that it is impossible (at least for me, from my experience) to come out with this concealer without sealing, which I can do for example with the Maybelline Eraser (with a very hydrating formula too) or even with the Radiant Nars Creamy Concealer, which is the opposite, liquid powder because it is extremely dry (for me). Only with the concealer, I feel that it disappears into nothing and leaves a trace of the product on my face, it is not pleasant …
Incredible is that- and here we disassemble all the bloggers, youtubers, influencers who spoke wonders of the anti-crease action of this concealer – with or without powders, the concealer marks the folds , probably due to its density. But let’s see , all concealers enhance the folds if you have them! There is no magic formula for this. And here it loses the value that it is supposed to have as a cult proofreader. I understand that not everyone can do well with a product, but you would be surprised to search Reddit and see girls who do indeed treat this product as overrated.
When I use it with translucent powders, be they the ones from my day-to-day (From Kat Von D) or the finest I have and which are wonderful (The ones from Make up forever ), the result can be even worse. because it is possible to see which areas are covered and which are not. That precious phenomenon called “patches”.
And as for the tone, I “failed” to choose a tone similar to my skin tone. I say “I failed because it is true that it will not cover my dark circle 100% but I have learned that even concealer can be your own makeup base, if it covers, everything is fine. Another drawback is that it oxidizes a bit, despite the fact that my concealer has a yellow undertone – in theory – when it oxidizes it remains a bit more salmon-colored. Is this normal? I don’t know, it works fine on my skin, you don’t notice a big difference in color, but surely someone will have a problem with this. Take a good look at the tone before buying.

We already know that choosing foundation / concealer shades online is a bit random. With pre-corrector things change a bit, but of course, with pre-corrector everything changes and if I want it for the day to day I am not going to overload the delicate skin of the dark circles with infinite bases. The tone that I took was the Light medium.
How does it look in the eyes?
I am going to be honest and emphasize that lately I have very sensitive eyes and therefore I tend to tear often, that may be one of the reasons why my concealer lasts less than it should. That is why I have decided to give it opportunities, but I think that this product is not the eighth wonder of the world, my opinion remains the same.
you can see how the concealer fits in my freshly applied eye cup and without powder, it doesn’t bother me that it doesn’t cover completely, or well yes. It bothers me a bit because everyone says this is a medium to high coverage concealer, but to me it is still a medium coverage concealer. My opinion
My opinion is that this is an overrated and expensive product for all the wonders that are talked about. I open the umbrella, because it must be one of the most unpopular opinions on this product right now. And the hype has passed a bit! I might not be professional enough to see the great results with these types of products, but for my part as a brand in general, their products don’t tell me many (good) things. What I tried is not very there and this is not the exception -although I think it is not sooo bad. But if I pay € 27 for a product that promises to be a wonder….
Maybe I speak too soon and don’t know how to use the product properly or that my sensitive eyes have prevented the product from shining in all its splendor; Regardless of all the variables against and for, for the price I still consider that the shape tape is below its value as a fashion makeup. I say this without wanting to be the needle in the haystack and the only one who doesn’t like it at all, but because it doesn’t work for me and after trying it, I don’t see why everyone goes crazy for it. Of course, if you have perfect skin, zero folds and three points of depigmentation in the dark circles, you will be phenomenal. But I, I feel a little disappointed, I expected a star product and for me it is a regular.
